Getting a Feel For It: The Spirituality of Emotions

If we reflect on our lives, the most important moments are those of the deepest emotion. Knowing this, if we long to have a meaningful life, it would make sense to cultivate a good relationship with our emotions.

Meditation is a way of understanding our own inner emotional landscape. This terrain, just like the natural world around us, can be full of incredible beauty. Emotions such as love, compassion, and joy inspire us and connect us with ourselves and with others. Yet other emotions can be painful and disturbing. Anger, jealousy, resentment and many other feelings may completely consume us, hurting our relationships and complicating our lives.

When emotions, be they pleasant or unpleasant, are embraced with a meditative outlook, they become occasions for a peaceful relationship with oneself and meaningful connections with others.

Participants are also invited to bring offerings for a small ceremony: colorful fruits and flowers, incense, candles, bunches of fragrant herbs, healthy, delicious snacks and drinks, and photographs or objects representing important people or concerns in their lives.
